And Another One Bites the Dust

This just in from across the border...

Alex has died at the hands of Sara H.

Before Sara had fallen to Michelle M., her socks of doom were making their way to Alex's door.

This is what his tombstone reads:

"What's worse than death by socks? Death by socks when you're hoping it's the knitpicks order you placed last week. :( Brutally and shamelessly murdered by Sara H., February 26th, 2009."

February 26, 200916'01''18

Farewell noble assassin!

The noose tightens on the remaining players.  Only 5 remain completely healthy.  One is gravely ill. The next few days should be interesting!

While we wait for the next victim, let's go back to the knitting talk.  Of course, I should probably mention the little sale we're having this weekend in honor of SPA.

All in-stock yarns will be 20% OFF starting today and lasting through Sunday. The sale is available through our online shop as well as in the store.  Even though the Brunswick store is closed on Sunday, you can shop online all day!

Now for some knitting!

Pam just whipped up a LopiLite vest of her own.

IMG_6708IMG_6709

Don't you love the colors she put together?

Amy T. did a blue version that is gorgeous! I need to get a picture of that.

Cheryl joined us at KAN looking fabulous in her Shopping Tunic sans cowl.  This is the pattern from Twinkle's Big City Knits and using Cascade's Magnum yarn.

IMG_6714

Diane was stunning in her Noro Silk Garden vest.

IMG_6715

I think we're all on a bit of a vest craze right now.  Diane and Barbara just started a mini knit-along of their own, making a vest with Cascade 220. Progress to date:

IMG_6716

And Jen looked amazing in her Twist and Shout from knitty.com.

IMG_6717

Edie stopped by on her way to a birthday party for her granddaughter. She just finished the Happily Ever After dress.

IMG_6706

Isn't is adorable?

In addition to the dress, Edie finished her first pair of socks! Now she's knitting them for everyone in the family. I'm so proud of her!

IMG_6707

Karen has been creative with the needles. She took stripes of old flannel sheets and HUGE needles to make this comfy rug.

IMG_6663

Even more knitted things will be appearing this weekend at the SPA retreat.  I can't wait for the fun - and the shopping.  My stash could use a little enhancing and the vendors always have such lovely yarns and fibers.

A little knitting to pass the time...

So some bloodthirsty readers out there are desperate for another kill. All I can offer you tonight is the vague report that MM (or Michelle M.) of ME has been taken out by Connie B.  The blow was softened with chocolate.  However, Michelle is unable to send a full report - including pictures - since she is traveling.  She promised pictures upon her return.

In the meantime, let's talk knitting.  I realized that I've been working away on things and not telling you about them!

There are Alec's socks.  He posed so nicely for pictures this morning.

IMG_6664IMG_6667

IMG_6669IMG_6670

I managed to get one of an actual sock.

IMG_6671

These are knit in Panda Cotton.  1 ball will make a pair for an active 6 year old.

A week or two ago, I finished my lopi-lite vest.  LOVE IT!!!  It is so damn cute.

IMG_6681IMG_6682

Fits like a dream.  And look Ma! No sleeves!

IMG_6684

Just cute little cap sleeves.  I layer it over a long-sleeved shirt.  Perfect.  Takes away the chill without being too hot. And I did I mention that I didn't have to knit sleeves?

I'm on to the second sock of my Sea Glass pair.

IMG_6694

These are all mine. They aren't even gonna spend time as a shop sample.  Ha!  All mine. Yup.

Amused is *almost* done.  Just the second sleeve to complete and the ends to weave.

IMG_6697

I was going to try for wearing it at SPA, but I think it will have to wait until next week.  Too much happening in the next few days for unrealistic goal setting.

Wanna see my newest love?

Meet baby alpaca lace from Cascade.

IMG_6688IMG_6692

You want to pet it, don't you?

It's not in the shop quite yet. UPS tells me it will be here sometime next week.  This is just the teaser skein the sales rep left with me to make me drool. I'm knitting the leaf lace shawl with it.

I'm not the only one who has been knitting.  I have pics to share, but they will have to wait since I haven't had dinner, and promised to write up a scarf pattern for the fabulous Jill from Bounce! who is cutting my hair in the morning.  Speaking of hair, have you seen Becka's? Looks gorgeous.  That was a Jill cut.  Jill is awesome. Must get Jill the pattern.

'night all!

No Post on Sundays

"'No post on Sundays,' he reminded them happily as he spread marmalade on his newspapers, 'no damn letters today -'"

Poor Uncle Vernon.  Little did the muggle realize that the powers mounting against him had no use for the post.

Our own Susan fell victim to the same false sense of security.  Rather than fleeing the country as any sensible BOTS player should at this point in the game, she assumed home would be safe this one day of the week.

Then, she looked out the window.  No, there weren't owls.

It was much worse.

DSC01259

A skilled killer was at her door.

100_1479

Luanne has struck again!

DSC01268

Susan rests in peace tonight with warm socks (quite pretty ones, too!).

Watch out everyone, Luanne is now formulating a plan to take down her next target.

The CSI team has finally completed its work at Esta's home.  The scene was gruesome.  Those with weak stomaches for fiber violence should look away now.

February 09, 200915'23''47DSCF0001

Death Trade Crosses Borders

While her first hit was relatively simple - just driving across a few towns - Peggy's (pegola) second victim posed a bit of a problem.  Patti was safely behind the US/Canada border.  Could Peggy get through the crossing unseen? Do we have an international assassin on our hands?

The report was submitted by Alex:

"I brought in the mail, tentatively, gingerly cradling the yellow paper envelope. I laid it in front of Patti, slowly. She looked up at me, fear in her eyes, for she knew what this envelope meant. But there was no sense in stalling. Without regard for her own safety, she scooped up the parcel and tore off the top. In a flash of cold steel and black smoke, she fell. It all happened so fast, but I somehow managed to catch a glimpse of the assailant that leaped in a swift rush of death from the envelope as it opened. This is what I saw:

February 18, 200911'29''09

A deadly ninja, clad in black, polished blades flashing.

After the haze of its smoke-bomb cleared, Patti lay, slain, on the floor. beside her, the ninja had left his grisly calling card.

February 20, 200915'51''11

I was lucky to have escaped death that day, and I know Patti is glad that I was there to bear witness of her passing, and tell her tale to the world. I only hope that when the day of my death comes, it will be as swift and painless, and at the hands of someone so skilled.

Patti Waters, 03/28/81-02/18/09, may she rest in peace.'

Evidently, Peggy had been in training at a super-secret ninja-knitting camp.  What skills has she been working on lately?  Who will be her next victim?

In an ironic twist of fate, just a day after Patti heard the swish of Peggy's steel needles, the US/Canadian post finally managed to get Patti's first BOTS virus to its target.  Patti was heard saying from the afterlife,  "Damn international mail system!!"

Amy (outdoorsgirl) was killed by Patti.  Reports from Missouri have filtered in:

"Bella tried her hardest to fight off the attacker but it was no use, the BOTS virus had already infected her owner. Leaving her with these beautiful hand knitted Noro socks. But her feet were warm in the after life.

Just before death took complete hold, Amy whispered,  "I love these socks, they are awesome."

BOT 001BOT 003

The elusive MM has come out of hiding for a very special mission - taking out the lightning fast needles of Sara (Sara6908). of OK.  The thrill of the kill was too much for MM, who celebrated in her lair.

Photo 8Photo 6

Photo 12

Seems that the Canadian post was involved in another tragic loss.  Early reports from the field suggest that Esta (estacam) was killed by Alex of Canada. The CSI team is at the scene and will file information as needed.

The CDC just issued a warning on the deadly BOTS virus (why it has taken them this long to get involved, I do not know.)

2 more people have become infected, but are unaware of their status and are therefore a danger to their friends and family.

Only 7 players remain unaffected.  But for how long?

Truly Gruesome

It is bad enough that our players are being struck down in the places they feel most safe - homes, work, yarn shops - but to killed along with your  spouse... the horror!

Tonight, a truly vicious killer, Amy of MO, returned to the scene of her first crime (the death of Mindy) to take out the one witness, Mindy's husband, Scott.

Be afraid players.  I am not sure we have seen this kind of ruthlessness before.

On a happier note, one of our newly departed, Cheryl from CT is quite happy in the afterlife. Sally from MO killed her with these happy socks.  As Cheryl said "The colors she chose reminded her of Autumn in New England...aren't they perfect for just that time of year!!"

Contagion Spreads

Isn't this how they have predicted a major catastrophe of modern time will begin? With a relatively unknown virus that appear innocently enough in one small town - say Lisbon, ME - and quickly spreads across the nation and globe? What have we started??

The deadly BOTS (Battle of The Soxes) virus is being sent to its victims with little care for human life on the part of their assassins.

Wendy didn't stand a chance when Lisa set her needles upon her. Jim, her sorrowful widow, submitted this note and the following pictures.

"Dear General Chesley,

It's with a heavy heart and deep sadness that I write this e-mail to you.  I am still shocked by the scene that greeted me upon arriving at my dear wife's apartment at 7:38 pm last night.  The last time I heard from Wendy was about 6:13 pm when she picked up and opened the packages that were waiting for her at the apartment office.  She was "pushing up daisies" with a beautiful pair of socks on her feet.  Not what I envisioned for Valentine's weekend.  These socks have taken my sweetie to heaven, if only I had had stopped the assassin before seven.

A search of the area revealed a yellow envelope and poem from Lisa in MO (see attached pictures).  The CSI said they would be sending out a bulletin warning others of this deadly killer on the loose.

Wendy obviously had a romantic weekend planned with dinner reservations at one of our favorite restaurants in Chattanooga.  The flowers I brought for her will now be used for the funeral.  I can only hope that they find her assassin quickly.  I will take solace in knowing that she will be slain in a warm pair of socks.  Look out to all who thought they may get to raid her yarn stash, her sisters are already fighting over it.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Jim (her loving husband)"

Valentine's Day ended sadly for another couple, this time in Maine.  David rushed to the shop to see if nurse-in-training Becka could do anything to stop the evil BOTS virus.  Unfortunately, it was already too late for him.  We could do nothing but take pictures.

IMG_6655IMG_6656

IMG_6659

With his dying words, David requested to be buried in the socks that brought such doom.  Although Kat of OK, had infused them with BOTS, they were comfy and cozy.

Today brought yet another victim.  Mary of ME fell to Cheryl of CT early this morning. Death was swift, but the socks softened the blow and Mary rests in peace.

Despite the reign of terror the assassins are holding over the knitting community, the knitters remain strong, and defiant in their craft. Gorgeous works of art continue to emerge and provide solace to our souls at this difficult time.

Lee brought in her husband and friends on Saturday for a little vacation-weekend shopping.  Of course, I had to get a picture of the sweater she had made for her lucky husband.  The pattern is from Men in Knits, and the yarn is Uruguay Chunky.

IMG_6649

Adrienne finished off another buttony hat out of Blizzard while knitting with us on Saturday. Can you believe she has yet to keep one for herself?

IMG_6651

Luanne brought in her beautiful granddaughter to model the newly finished Amused sweater. So lovely!!

IMG_6660

On thursday, we got to see Donna's very first lace project!!!!!  She made the leaf lace shawl out of Malabrigo sock yarn.  One skein will make a shawl this size.  I wants one.  I wants it that color - Velvet Grapes.

IMG_6645

We couldn't help noticing Diane's socks. Her mother made them from Noro Kureyon Sock and I just happened to be wearing a pair from the exact same colorway!

IMG_6644

Tamsin was look fabulous in her star-crossed slouchy beret knit with Noro Kochoran.

IMG_6636

Karen surprised me with this little gem.  I can't remember what it's called, but it makes me so very happy!

IMG_6638

Another friend is soon to receive some of Karen's handiwork. She made a pinwheel baby blanket from Dream in Color Classy. Remember how I said she was working on a matching hat with a knitted liner?

IMG_6640IMG_6641

IMG_6642IMG_6643

Perhaps my favorite moment of the weekend was when we got a phone call from Mara's very sweet boyfriend.  Seems he wanted to arrange for a Valentine's Day delivery of an armful of Malabrigo.

IMG_6650

That beats chocolates or flowers any day!

Happy Valentine's Day!

As we celebrate this day that reminds us to treasure our much loved family and friends, it is with a heavy heart that I must inform you of the passing of 3 of our own.

Early yesterday afternoon, the ghost of Sandy (8purllane) spoke to me from out of the ether.  Seems she had been Poisoned, Spunky Eclectic style, by a pair of socks crafted by Luanne (brunswickknitter). The socks, while they look innocent enough, are knit with yarn laced with the deadly dye. Poor Sandy was dead the moment she touched the luscious fiber. Who will be Luanne's next victim? What concoction will she brew this time?

100_1467

Later that same day, a startling brief message arrived from Wendy (trixie423). She was dead. Lisa (ocmaggie) was seen lurking in the area. Our reporters are on the scene and will be sending information as soon as they can. In the meantime, stay alert.  If you see Lisa - don't let her give you socks!!

The evening brought even more horror.  Terri (knitparty) was murdered in her own home by Shannon of NJ.

IMG_0057IMG_0060

IMG_0059

While the death seems to have been agonizing, she is resting in peaceful slumber with warm toes.

17 players are now dead. 6 have contracted the deadly BOTS virus, but remain blissfully unaware of their terminal state. 10 remain healthy.

Beware of packages today.  Is that candy? Or is it SOCKS???

3 More Dead and counting...

We've had early reports from the battlefield.  At least 3 assassins went down today.  Pictures and details have been promised. Once they have been received, Command Central will publish a full report.  Look for news in the morning.

Friday the 13th

The sun is shining (at least in Maine) and another day dawns on the battlefield.  Do you feel strong enough to face your mailbox? Does the date on the calendar send a tickle of fear down your back?

While we wait to see what this day brings, let's review the carnage to-date.

First up is a picture of the lovely - yet oh, so deadly - socks sent by Esta to Shannon D.

DSCF0007DSCF0012

Our embellishment champion from BOTS I has outdone herself once again.  Take a close look at those beautiful socks. The top features Esta's signature bells and beads dot the last round of bicycles.

As if that wasn't luxurious enough, Esta softened the deadly blow with a little sweet:

Esta, can you kill me next year???

Very sad news to report.  Caitlin, the ultimate winner of The Battle of the Soxes I was killed yesterday by Mindy of ME.  Caitlin, you are a noble warrior and defended your title proudly. May you rest in peace.

Lauren of OH found these socks - courtesy of Scott of ME in her mailbox.

But, perhaps the most shocking death was that of Leah. Sandra took her out.  The scene was so gruesome that the CIS team was unwilling to send  any photos.  Instead, they submitted this re-enactment (note - the socks are not from this battle):

News from Command Central

Your Battle Commander has just returned from a lovely Knit at Night.  Thanks to all who were there! It relaxing and entertaining - just like the USO during wartime - and just what I needed.

The field has been bloody today and there is much to report.  However, I want to do justice to our brave combatants and am too tired tonight to pull it all together. So, I will keep you in suspense for an evening and will post tomorrow.

'night all.

Late Breaking News

Sometimes killers sneak through under the radar - especially if the Battle Commander is too tired to read properly - but luckily, their guilt usually gets to them and they reveal themselves.

Thanks to eyes sharper than mine -and perhaps a bit guilt ridden- the true assassin behind Sandra's death is now known.

 FEBRUARY 9, 2009

Sock Monkey of Doom on the Loose

Knitted primate suspected in the death of local knitter

Westport Island, ME--Local police discovered a gruesome scene at the home of  Sandra Crehore today.  Crehore was found dead at her mailbox, attacked with what appears to be a pair of Killer Socks, size 9.  While authorities are releasing few details about the ongoing investigation, a source close to the Crehore family, who wished to remain anonymous, reported that a strange, knitted creature was left close to the body along with the deadly footwear.  “I think it’s supposed to be a monkey,” the source noted, “but it’s like no monkey I’ve ever seen.  I’ve had nightmares about that thing ever since I saw it.”

IMG_0021

Some in this close-knit community fear the crime bears the tell-tale signs of the Sock Monkey of Doom, who was reported missing from the Yarn-Diego Zoo shortly before midnight on Friday, February 6.  Zookeepers warn the public to approach their mailboxes with extreme caution, as the suspect may be armed and dangerous.

A tragic tale of hand-knitting gone wrong

Ina Stash, a veteran zookeeper at the Yarn-Diego Zoo, sat down with The Bugle staff for an exclusive interview about the mysterious wooly primate, known to the zoo staff as Noro.

“Noro was a kind, cheerful chimp when he was first knitted,” said Stash.  “He didn’t look like all the other Sock Monkeys, but he was made with care and love as all hand-knits are.”  Stash said she always thought of Noro as “colorful”, though others describe him as a grotesque creature with a misshapen, limbs made of scraps of leftover, mismatched yarns in garish colors of green, orange and purple, his face twisted in a crooked grin with eyes made of knotted yarn.

“As an adolescent, Noro began to realize he was different,” Stash said, tears glistening in her eyes. He was mocked by all the ‘normal’ Sock Monkeys and taunted by the other knitted animals until he dared not show his unraveling face in the light of day,”

“It got so he hated being outdoors with the other yarnimals,” said Stash who, with a note of sadness in her voice, went on to say that Noro spent most of his time in the darkness in his solitary cage.  “He turned surly and bitter, even though I tried to tell him all the zookeepers loved him just as much as the other Sock Mon- keys.”

When asked whether she thought Noro could perpetrate such a heinous crime, Stash hesitated.  “I wish I could say no,” she whispered.  “But about a week before he disappeared, I was in the Sock Monkey House cleaning his cage when I caught him pulling strands of yarn out of his own tail.”  Did she have any guesses as to why he was doing this?  “I can’t be sure, but I think he was knitting socks.  Evil socks.”

With great thanks to Jen D. of ME for passing along this report, and corroborating photos.  Lock you doors knitters! Noro is reportedly still on the loose.

Diversionary Tactics

The most successful assassins use all their skills and resources to take down their target.  We have not forgotten the Rogue Knitter of last year, who tried to strike fear in the heart of every player by taking out command central.

This year, an unidentified player has decided to confuse and startle the competition. Seemingly at random, packages were found at players' doorsteps today, containing this:

Or this:

Or:

Players were momentarily thrown off their game.  What did this mean? Were they dead by candy? Who was behind it all?

My dear BOTS players, what does it all mean? What could be next?

Alas, for 7 more of our players, it is too late.

Before I reveal their identities, I must share a truly awesome photo submitted by MM.  Remember how she almost took out Jenna's grandmother with her presentation? Well, I believe this photo explains why:

IMGA0255

MM, I must thank you.  You have officially made knitting and this sock war extremely cool in the eyes of my 9 year old. Well done.

While I was typing up last night's review, 2 players were in the throes of death. Shannon fell to the swift needles of Esta (estacam on Ravelry).  Did you know that Esta is a ringer? She is a sock war champion through The Day of the Dead sock war.  Watch out! Imagine if she and Caitlin met across a skein of sock yarn!

I had a late night report from a sorrowful widower. Terry M. of MO reported the sad passing of his dear wife Peggy.

"Dear Commander Chesley

It is with a heavy heart that I report the untimely demise of my beloved wife of 35+ years. She succumbed to the deadly bots virus upon returning home this evening. Whew am I glad that her insurance policy was paid up. Private wake was held, attended by myself and her two kitties. As You may know we live in a rather remote location. The Amish neighbor is doing the honors of building the casket.

Sincerely the new widower Terry"

This morning he added:

"Commander

In my grief last night I forgot to report Peggy's final words "Yummy Socks".

Terry"

The family was hit doubly hard as their daughter-in-law, Mindy, fell to Amy (outdoorsgirl).

IMG_0060

About an hour later, Rori of OK was viciously attacked by socks from Wendy's (trixie423)hands.

P2081228P2061217

Perhaps Rori's family will be comforted to know that Wendy was seen taken from the battlefield with a wound to her knitting fingers.  Seems the intense speed with which she knitted led to a yarn burn across a finger.

Leah (lettuceleaf) executed Jen KC of ME in style, going so far as to provide the headstone.

P1010662P1010663P2110074P2110075

Despite the amazing headstone, Jen reports that her murder was particular torturous as her killer taunted her in the days prior to the assassination.

As reported by Jen,

"Last week, the lovely LettuceLeaf sent me the following PM on Ravelry:

This Grave

contains all that was mortal

of a Young English ‘Knitter’

Who

On ‘her’ deathbed

in the bitterness of ‘her’ heart

at the Malicious Powers of ‘her’ enemies

Desired

these words to be engraven on ‘her’ Tomb Stone

Here Lies One Whose ‘Socks Did Her In’.

Then, on Monday, afternoon, a new pair of socks appeared in her projects, knit for me. I was doomed.

It was a dark and drizzly night. I knew that death might be upon me, so as I turned the corner onto my street, it was with trepidation that I looked at the mailboxes. There was no key in the large mailbox, meaning someone on our street had a package too big for their box. As I unlocked my box, I hoped against hope that the key to the big mailbox was not there. Lo! It was. Maybe my husband placed another order with Sierra Trading Post...he's an addict. But, no, there, in the big box, were two packages. One, I knew, was my end. At 7:35, I was struck dead in my kitchen. But, I have BEAUTIFUL socks that fit perfectly!

Note that the little figures on the tombstone are actually buttons!"

Well played, Leah!

It was not a good night for the Jens in our game.  Dear Jen D. (madmaineknitter) fell a swift, yet patriotic death at the hands of Terri of MO (knitparty).

She submitted this report:

"(with apologies to Mark Twain) The news of my death is, sadly, not an exaggeration.  I have the great misfortune to note that, at 6:19 PM, I was felled with a deadly--but wonderfully patriotic--pair of socks dispatched by Terri Davis of Missouri. A cruel karmic twist, I suppose, given that I was Terri's assassin in BOTS I. To show me she recognized the irony, Terri skewered my sock with a cold metal size 6 needle.

The deadly socks were accompanied by a Livestrong bracelet, a gorgeous set of stitch markers, and the following note:

Ah, Jen, so sorry to see you go

You have been a most lovely foe

Your socks are well stuffed complete with skewers

I felt lucky to be your wrongdoer.

Love,

Terri aka Knitparty from Missouri"

Players, you have completely exhausted me tonight. The action has left me dizzy.  11 players are now dead. 9 pairs of socks are in-transit.

Note to our dearly departed.  If you have socks-in-progress that need to be passed along to a killer, please check in with me first. Now that a number of players have fallen, I am orchestrating getting the socks directly to the next living assassin in line.

Good night all! I look forward to tomorrow's action.

A Fearful Day

Players across the battlefield approached today with dread.  Except for Deb - may she rest in peace - everyone knew that THEY could be one of the 11 with socks hurtling their way.

Who went down? How many are in mortal danger tomorrow?

All in good time my dear readers.

First, we have a late breaking report from yesterday's action.  Our brave embedded reporter, Joe Socks, managed to dodge the fire from Peggy's fierce needles and snap this picture of the first kill.

2009 02 09_0040

Along with a few close-ups of the socks.

battle socks001battle socks003

A mere few hours separated Peggy's devastating hit and the surprise attack by Michelle M.  MM, as she is known in darker circles, arrived at Jenna's house and almost took collateral damage when she surprised Jenna's unsuspecting grandmother with the deadly socks.  This is what happens when non-knitters get in the way of our needles!

Little did she know that Jenna (or knarlyknitter for you ravelry folks) had already successfully put her own kill into motion. With the US Postal Service as her unwitting accomplice, knarlyknitter murdered Cheryl B. (mathgeek00).

IM005029

From beyond her fibery grave, Cheryl writes,

"As I sat at work (after hours) finishing my first sock for the sock war, I must have had a sixth sense... why else would one decide to knit in a cubicle instead of in her comfy house?  Must have been because of what was waiting at home...

At 6:07pm on Tuesday, February 10th, I pulled into my driveway, excited to go inside and cast on for sock #2.  I stopped briefly to open the garage door when I turned and saw it... a white puffy package sticking out of the mailing box.  I pulled the car in to the garage and my excitement started to wane (wain? wayne? :))... I get up to the mailbox and sure enough... there's a R.I.P. on the package... I've been killed!!

Enclosed were a cozy pair of purple and green Ironman socks (at least I got killed by my favorite color!) and the note:

Though you fought well, dear Cheryl,

these socks must be your peril.

For your assassin, she's no quitter...

you have been slain by

knarlyknitter

So thank you, Jenna (knarlyknitter) and I leave you with my final dying words (and my apologies to Edgar Allen Poe):

'And now was acknowledged the presence of the Socks.  They had come like a thief in the night.  And dropped the reveler in the blood-bedewed halls of her revel, and died she in the despairing posture of her fall.  And the life of the ebony clock went out with that of the knitter.  And the flames of the tripods expired. And Darkness and Decay and the Socks held illimitable dominion over all.'"

Cheryl is not lonely in death tonight. She was preceded by Michelle W. (mooshell) who was struck down by David (david88). A gorgeous pair of socks led to her demise. So while we mourn her gone, we know her toes are warm and cozy.

Sock Murder2Sock Murder1

Another one of our intrepid reporters happened upon the scene (who is tipping them off?).

North Yarmouth, ME - 4:45 p.m. ET

It was MURDER! MURDER I tell you, plain and simple. She was a trooper in all this (as incidentally was her father - though not the same thing, actually), working diligently, frantically trying to keep herself in the battle and assassinate her chosen opponent in the state of Missouri. Alas, it was not to be so. Her choice of fine, fingerling yarn and lack of experience with patterns was her downfall, as was her anal and foolish attention to detail, and her inability to let go of the occasional (okay lots of) mistakes. Three, maybe four restarts later (it is rumored she may have used a magnifying glass to find mistakes - but that story is unsubstantiated at this posting), she succumbed to yet another murderous assassin who waited, unbeknownst to her, in the dark shadows of historic Topsham. Sending his fibery weapon in an innocent enough looking yellow mailing package, the stealthy knitter David caught her with her needles down and it was all over for fair Michelle.

Her pride was her downfall - her desire for the perfect sock. Alack and alas, Michelle Wainer has succumbed to a sock-inflicted and certainly fatal (well, yah...she's like...DEAD) wound. Tomorrow, her hopeless attempts will be sent out to the post, to the man who her brought about her untimely end in less than four days time. Her family mourns her passing, but celebrates her attempt at keeping the good fight. Sadly, this author has been told by an anonymous source that those she called friends may be frothing at the bit for her meager, yet delightfully yummy stash of yarn.

In late breaking news,  JenKC has had a premonition of her own death. Will her second sight be able to save her? What will become of poor Jen?

And what of our friends across the country and over the border in Canada.  What powers have they invoked to evade death so long? How will they fare in the light of day tomorrow?

15 pairs of socks in transit tonight.

Sleep well all.

First Kill

It is with a heavy - yet disturbingly gleeful - heart, that I announce the first official death in the Battle of the Soxes II!

At 12:59pm today, Deb from Maine fell to the swift hand of Peggy F. While many of our combatants seem to be relying on alternate methods of delivery, Peggy didn't trust anyone else to do the job.  She carried out the hit herself.

Congratulations Peggy!  Watch out everyone, Peggy has her new assignment and is back at her deadly work.

With her last fiber of energy, Deb crawled to the computer to report her own demise.  Of the socks, she says,

"I loved knitting these great Marathon socks, I will rest well in my new soft Rhubarb ones. Now that I know the tricks of this pattern, I am designing another pair- for myself! Thanks, Peggy."

From our private tracking system designed by Peter,  I can see that 11 souls shall soon join her.

Since the first kill was so swift and unexpected, the paparazzi missed the entire event and therefore, we have no pictures.

Rather than leave you without any visuals, let's look at some fiber eye candy that arrived in the shop today.  Some Dream in Color Classy and Smooshy.

Yum.  Rest well players for who knows what tomorrow might bring...

(Oh, and a reminder... report your deaths promptly and with flourish.  Assassins and their targets are encouraged to submit crime scene photos. )

Amusing

No deaths to report. Yet.

This is perhaps the most entertaining part of the game - when no one has died, and everyone is looking over their shoulders.  Who will scream at the poor mailman tomorrow as he approaches with that unexpected package?

While we wait for that first CSI report, let's enjoy some beautiful knitting.  Our Amused KAL is well underway, with at least 2 finished sweaters!

Mine is at the collar, which I decided to knit before the sleeves.

I'm using Baby Alapca Chunky in black.  I seem a bit obsessed with black lately.  Don't you find that you go through color phases? I'm slowing pulling out of my turquoise/blue period, and am sliding into purples and blacks.  Yes, blacks.  Have you noticed how there are an infinite variations of black? Well, I guess there are with any color.  But, it fascinates me with black - a color that you would think of as solidly just black. And yet, it's not. Especially in fiber.  There are so many variables, from the property of the fiber, the dye, to the way the light catches it.  This just one of those things that non-knitters don't get about our world. Poor things.

The incredible Ms. Patti, who despite having deserted us for Canada, is still knitting with us. She is the first to complete Amused.  Check out how she carried the cable down the front to meet the ribbing.

Looks gorgeous.

Mindy is zipping along.  I love the color she picked!

And the rumor is that Luanne finished hers!! She promises pictures soon.  This one was made for a very lucky granddaughter.

Think we can bribe the granddaughter into modeling it for us??

The Ironman

As we discovered last year, the Battle of the Soxes is a true test of endurance.  Amy used that thought as her inspiration for this year's design - The Ironman.

Each pattern repeat represents a different feat - biking, swimming, and running.

Who will complete the challenge first and win the prize for the first kill? We'll be featuring full updates, along with pictures of the carnage, on the blog.  To the right, you'll find our new Battle of the Soxes II Action Tracker.  That's where we'll be keeping a running list of kills, socks in transit to their new assassin, and any other tidbits we find interesting.

I hear the needles flying... who will fall today?

Battle of the Soxes II Pattern

Let the game begin.  Best of luck to all!

Are you ready to knit?

Surprise! We're releasing the pattern early!!  Here ya go...

Psych!

Sorry, but you gotta wait till midnight.  Hee hee.  This is gonna be fun.  I can't wait to start knitting a pair myself.

While we wait for the magic hour of midnight, let's get caught up on this crazy week.

First, I want to thank you all so much for your caring support of Becka, myself and our family.  It has been a difficult time, but you have all made it so much easier.  I am so blessed to have such wonderful friends.

Now, I'm guessing you are curious as to how our flood is coming along.  The roof is still leaking merrily away.  Drip, drip, drip provides lovely musical accompaniment to my day.

Most of the major leaks stopped by Wednesday.  Then, I heard the ping, ping of the water again.  A small spot appeared just slightly to the left of my head.

IMG_6469

It grew.  And grew.  By the time KAN started, we had a dinner plate-sized ring going.  When everyone left, it was a full blown pizza pan and started to buckle.

IMG_6484IMG_6481

Isn't it pretty? That would be me trying to catch the steady stream.

By this morning, it had slowed down significantly and the roofing guys appeared and are trying to track down the source. In the meantime this is what our counter looks like:

As a result, we had to post this little sign.

IMG_6551

Luckily for my sanity, the past few days also brought awesome yarn.  So while the drips rained down, I got to pet this:

IMG_6510IMG_6519

That would be Malabrigo sock and Chunky.  We also got worsted weight, but I neglected to take a pic.

Amy knew I was in a state and brought immediate medication:

IMG_6544

A whole beautiful bag of Spunky yumminess.  I literally laid my head on it.  Ahhhh....  She also brought the desperately awaited Sea Glass.  Sorry, all skeins are claimed.  If you claimed one - I'll be contacting you soon.

And, lastly, we have the color of the month - POISON.

IMG_6543

As of an hour ago, only one skein remained. First one to email me tonight gets it.

We also got new books:

See that cowl sweater???? Amanda and I have both decided we must make it.  She is thinking Noro, I'm considering Spunky Summer.  I've been wanting to knit a cowl-neck sweater out of the Spunky Summer since last year.  This is perfect.

Ok, what else?

New colors in Ranco Multi sock yarn.

Restocking Heritage Paints.

Along with many boxes of Cascade 220, 220 Tweed, 220 Heathers, 220 Superwash.  More Magnum.  And new Noro Kureyon.

Phew!

Elsebeth Lavold's latest collection is here.

People have been knitting.  Check out Jenna's stunning Wisteria.

IMG_6464IMG_6466

She used Cascade's Baby Alpaca Chunky.  It is completely fabulous.

Karen made a Pinwheel Blanket out of Dream in Color Classy for a very lucky little baby.  Then, she came up with the brilliant idea to make a matching hat.  Last night she was working on a complimentary lining for the hat by using Maizy.  She promises to share the pattern when it is complete.

IMG_6468

I still need to update you on Amused.  There is much to tell, and to show.  But, I need to go do the dinner, get the kids to bed thing.  Perhaps I will compile the Amused update tomorrow while we await the first kill!

The joys of melting snow

So the temperature got well above freezing yesterday.  And while that normally might be a good thing, above freezing means snow and ice turn to water.  And a good chunk of that water decided to find its way through the walls and into the shop.

Fortunately it looks like the yarn has mostly all been spared.  There was one basket that caught a fair amount of dripping from the ceiling, but the majority of the water was coming in through the window and onto the floor there.

As a result, we were out of commission for most of yesterday, and we're going to be closed today as well.  There are going to be folks in and out of there working on the problem, so it's likely to be a bit of a mess.  Amanda will be in the shop starting around lunchtime, and if the chaos is controlled enough, she may try to open back up.  But I think for the most part we're going to have to write off the day as a loss, and shoot for getting things cleaned up for first thing Wednesday morning when Chesley will be back in the shop.

Battle of the Soxes II assignments are out

Hi all.  It's Peter.

34 players spread across 10 states/provinces in 2 countries.  The registrations are in, and the assignments have now been e-mailed to all participants.  If you're playing, or you thought you were playing, and you didn't receive an assignment e-mail, please let us know ASAP at battle AT theknittingexperience.com so we can sort it out.

As a reminder, the pattern will be released Friday night right here on the blog.  The assignment e-mail contains some details so that you can start planning and swatching, which I've also included below.  This information is all that will be released prior to the pattern being published.

Note that there was a discussion on Ravelry of including Ravelry names so that people could look up their victims to get ideas for favorite colors, etc.  Where they have been provided to us, we have included them.  There are others that we knew, but did not include, just in case it was a strategic decision on the part of the assassin to omit this information.

Drop us a note if there are any questions or clarifications that need to be provided.  Before Friday, we'll post a send out a final reminder about the process, assassin etiquette, and lessons learned from last year that will help to keep things as fair and fun as possible.
