Inspiration Monday - The Noro Wrap

The holiday knitting rush is done. Now we can settle back into knitting whatever strikes our fancy - guilt free. Perhaps it's even time to indulge in knitting something special just for you.

One of my favorite samples in the shop is a scarf/wrap that Becka knit up out of 5 skeins of Noro Silk Garden. She used color # 269. Knit on large needles, it works up quickly and has the most amazing drape, making it a very versatile piece. You can bundle it up like a scarf, or wrap it loosely around your shoulders as an elegant accessory.

The pattern is from Jenny Watson's Mini Knits Too collection.

Just like the first collection, it is packed with a remarkable number of patterns including sweaters, throws, hats, mittens, etc... . So once you've made the wrap, you can whip up a pair of mittens to match!

Quick reminder on shop hours this week: we'll be closed on New Year's day, but open for regular hours the rest of the week. Stop by and visit us! We'll be keeping busy with inventory counting, and ordering some really fabulous stuffs for the new year.

Inspiration Monday - Baby Vest

Elizabeth Smith - the fabulous local designer behind the Concetta Cardigan - has a new pattern!

This one is for all the little ones in your life - The Chunky Monkey Baby/Toddler Vest. Ready for a shot of adorable?

4194024964_946ddf3a3b4194024960_784583e708

I know, too sweet, right? To make it even better, Elizabeth designed it in Cascade's 128 Superwash. That is a chunky, which means you can have the perfect baby gift knit up in an afternoon.

To make it even better, Elizabeth was very generous with the sizes. I know it can be frustrating to see something this cute in just a baby size. She took it all the way through 4T.

The pattern is available through Ravelry. Or you can go directly to her website

Congratulations Elizabeth!

New Hours and Crochet Inspiration

Big news!! Starting this week, we will now be open 7 days a week!

That's right, no more waiting till Monday to get your fiber fix. You can come knit on the big red couch on Sundays from 11am-4pm. AND, to better accommodate the busy Saturday shoppers, we will now be staying open until 5pm every Saturday.

Many, many thanks to all our fabulous customers who have made these extra hours necessary. We look forward to seeing you on Sundays!

While we're talking schedules, here are the TKE holiday hours:

On Thursday, Dec. 24th, we’ll be open until 2pm.

Friday, Dec. 25th - CLOSED

Saturday, Dec. 26th - open as usual

On Dec. 31st, we’ll be open as usual for KAN.

Friday, January 1st - CLOSED

Today, our Inspiration Monday comes from one of those amazing fiber peeps who has become part of our TKE family. Luanne has amazed us all with her speedy needles and crochet hooks this holiday season. She has accomplished the monumental task of making cowls for her coworkers - and she supervises people in not just one office, but three!

As of Thursday, she had produced these gorgeous crocheted lace cowls:

and more were being planned:

Luanne has been whipping out three a night. When I saw how awesome they looked, and heard how fast they worked up, I knew it had to be our feature today. The pattern? The One Row Lace Cowl, free on Ravelry.com and through the designer's website. You only need about 100yds of a worsted weight yarn. Luanne has used Cascade 220, Blue Sky Alpacas Organic Cotton, and many others. Consider Malabrigo and Spud and Chloe Sweater

Thanks Luanne!!

Many other presents were underway this past week.

Mary Ellen was in the home stretch of her Iain Sweater knit in Cascade Eco Wool destined for her extremely lucky son.

Penny made the most beautiful and squishy soft Just Enough Ruffles Scarf out of Blue Sky Alpacas Organic Cotton.

Michelle is making a super cozy hat for someone special out of Malabrigo Chunky.

IMG_9878

Karen and Sarah are working on 5th Avenue Infinity scarves out of Cascade 220 and Silky Wool respectively.

IMG_9887IMG_9873

Bridget is making her dad a warm hat.

IMG_9877

Terri has some super warm socks on the needles.

IMG_9880

Sue has us all drooling over the pure cashmere shawl she is making for her mother-in-law.

IMG_9891

On Saturday night, we had our annual TKE holiday party. Pam was absolutely incredible and welcomed us all into her lovely home for the occasion. The knitters cooked, knit, and raided their stash for some envy-worthy yankee swap stuffs. I was too wrapped up in the fun to be taking pictures, but managed a few shots.

Confessions of a Yarn Shop Owner

I am so ashamed.

As a yarn shop owner, I sometimes feel like there are certain expectations of me. For example, my stash should be outstanding. That one is easy, since the idea of being without yarn that I would want to knit if the world were to shut down tomorrow sends me into a blinding panic. I have thoroughly prepared for such eventualities. There is yarn and fiber hidden away in neat little corners all over our house.

But my needles? Shameful. Just shameful.

Not the collection itself, rather the organization.

I kinda think there is the expectation that I will have a very slick needle organization system.

Alas, the truth is an embarrassment, which I am now prepared to admit. Here you go. Here is my current needle storage system:

IMG_9866

IMG_9867

That would be a Crabtree and Evelyn gift set bag from many Christmases ago.

Not only does it not contain all my needles anymore, it is impossible to find anything. Since opening the shop, I've been in search of something that could tame this insanity. While I have loved and craved the beautiful silk cases from Lantern Moon, I knew they would not be sufficient to contain this situation. I needed a system. A complete needle organization system that can put up with my haphazard way of storing things.

Introducing my newest love: the Namaste Needle Binders!

IMG_9831

It has the same sturdy construction as the Namaste bags. The 3 ring binder comes with "pages" for all our needles and notions. My favorite are the mesh pockets for circular needles. Because they are so roomy and strong, you can put multiple circs in each pouch.  If I am good, this means I can actually put all my US 6, 8, 9s together!

The purple one in front is mine and only at the shop now as a display item. After the holidays, it comes home and goes to work. The rest are up for grabs.

Another cool organization tool? Our new lace blocking wires and plastic case. (I actually think the case is the part I like best.)

IMG_9859IMG_9862

The strong plastic tube with neat little endey bits is perfect for the wires!

In the knitting realm, I finished the Mini Mochi hat! Look at the crown. Isn't it lovely? (Don't look too close, because the decreases got a little wonky.)

IMG_9856IMG_9857

David whipped up some gorgeous Christmas stockings from one of the new Knitting Pure and Simple patterns. He used Cascade 220. Perfect for their beautiful apartment.

IMG_9864

I leave you with a thought as we all plan out our holiday shopping. I have noticed a trend in our house lately. Regardless of what cool new gadget has arrived, the most popular toy at our house is always the largest box I can find.

IMG_9853IMG_9855

When exactly do we lose the love of a good cardboard box? I don't find them that appealing anymore, and that is sad. Although, if I packed it with some yarn and my new needle case, I could call it my vacation home and might never come out!

Inspiration Monday - One Sided

It's here! Thank you all for your patience. The Spunky Eclectic One Sided Vest pattern is now available. Of course, I am so excited, I couldn't resist making it the feature for today.

4163822095_009a789d62

The classic styling, with one diamond cable that goes up one side (front and back), makes it a great unisex pattern. Knit waist shaping for a woman, or without for a man. Because few like seaming, it's worked in the round up to the arm holes.

Yarn ideas? Cascade's Eco Wool, 128 Superwash, or Baby Alpaca Chunky. Malabrigo Chunky is another fabulous option.

Not only did today bring the One Sided Vest, but Dream in Color Starry and Classy arrived!

Check out the beautiful colors in Starry

IMG_9836

I ADORE this yarn. It is so incredibly beautiful, and yummy squishy soft.

Susan made a lovely pair of socks for a very lucky person on her holiday list out of Starry.

IMG_9828

Notice how the sparkles end up adding just the perfect amount of glitz - subtle, yet eye catching.

I've been knitting away like crazy on my Mini Mochi hat. The pattern is addictive. I've ended up knitting well past bedtime just so that I could see how the next set of colors would play out. Got to the crown shaping last night.

IMG_9835

I'll leave you today with a very special treat. Emily and baby Samuel came to visit us last week. He is growing so fast! And was an excellent little visitor. I think he really felt at home surrounded by all the yarn.

Mini Mochi

UPS brought yarny happiness today.

We're expecting a couple shipments tomorrow, but I was secretly hoping that something might appear a little early. Specifically, I was waiting for more Mini Mochi from Crystal Palace so that I could finally make this hat

IMG_9820

It only takes 2 skeins of this yummy soft yarn and I've been itching to knit it since we started carrying Mini Mochi. As an extra bonus, I recently finished the second of my Raindrop Lace Socks

IMG_9818

and therefore HAD to get a new project started before knitting imbalance set in.

I'm not the only one finishing great knits.

Check out the hat that Melissa knit, along with the cute baby dress for her niece!

IMG_9775IMG_0920

Susan made a gorgeous shawl.

IMG_9777

Cheryl finished an adorable vest for our KAL.

IMG_9778

Amy made her own beautiful Malabrigo version of the Colonnade shawl.

IMG_9782

Diane lucked out when her mom decided to make this fabulous Noro Kureyon sweater for her!

IMG_9803

And Sarah looks amazing in her finished Birch Leaf Beret. Only 2 skeins of Debbie Bliss baby cashmerino.

IMG_9806

Oh, I almost forgot to mention that UPS also brought us some neat little gifty items.
