Good times

Good times

A huge thank you to Heidi and everyone who came to book signing/celebration. It's not often that you get to spend an afternoon with designers (by the end of the day we had 5 in the room) and indulge in knitting talk.

To make things even better, Heidi offered to let us keep the samples from her book for a few more days. So, we'll have an on-going trunk show.  Check out some of the projects.

The book signing came on the heels of an awesome Knit at Night. Something must have been in the air, because the filters were off and the conversation was thoroughly entertaining.

There were also a few finished works to show.

Mara stopped in with her beaded Odessa hat

Sandy made the most gorgeous lace scarf out of tilli tomas beaded silk.  And she made it as a gift.  She is going to GIVE IT AWAY!  She is a better woman than I.

Karen had her beautiful shawl (knit in Spunky Rustic Silk) blocked and ready to share.

Thanks everyone!

I've spent the past few days working on my Citrus Yoke Pullover.  It is such a comforting knit - something I desperately needed.  I tried it on yesterday and was really pleased with the look and fit.
IMG_2514IMG_2518
Today, I'm in full storm-prep mode.  I'm like a little kid with snow storms.  Peter curses them, largely because he does the shoveling, snowblowing, etc... . I get to stay inside, knit, cook, etc...  Pretty sweet deal, hun?

He's going to be heading out with the rest of the masses to the grocery store.  Now, I would like to point out that we are typically NOT those people who rush to the store before a storm.  Quite the opposite.  We're usually laughing at those people.  Because, really.  Do you think you'll be trapped in your house for weeks? Unfortunately, we are those people who have neglected to do the grocery shopping so we have no food in the house.

While he does that, I'm going to knit.  Check out the zipper situation on my Rogue.  Do a little holiday decorating.  Perhaps make some cookies.

And wait for snow.

Snow days

Snow days

What did you do with yours?

Technically, I only had one snow day since the shop was open today.  But, I got to watch the snow drifting down out our big front window this morning, so it kinda counts.

I love snow days and had this one very well planned. The Brunswick school system got me off to an unexpectedly early start with a 5am wake-up call.  Did you know they now CALL you to tell you that school is cancelled?  And they call at 5am!

As someone who is most decidedly not a morning person (I need 3 cups of coffee before I can speak coherently), a 5am blast from the phone is just not ok.  Especially when we all know that when the phone rings between the hours of 11pm and 5am, chances are it isn't good news.

Who exactly came up with the brilliant notion that parents needed to know that school was cancelled before the sun comes up? Why isn't the old fashioned, let 'em watch the scrolling list on tv, or listen to the radio, or even check the web, sufficient?

On the plus side, the early call did give me a couple of quiet hours to knit while the rest of the house slept.

I finished what yarn I had wound for the Citrus Yoke Pullover and I think I might be ready to bind off. Have to try it on to be sure.  This is a very fast knit - very satisfying.

IMG_2528

I finished the first of my grandmother's socks and cast on for the other one today. They got hit even harder by the storm since they live Downeast.  She needs her warm socks asap.

IMG_2526
I got another inch or two done on the sleeves for Peter's sweater. Turns out that the man has unusually long arms.  This is not something I had considered before, but may I caution all knitters out there that when planning a sweater for someone, check out their arms.  Nothing against long arms. I'm just saying that it gets rather tedious knitting sleeves. He's getting a vest next time.
IMG_2529
I also got to block my Rogue!
IMG_2525
Penelope helped me sew in the zipper over the weekend.
IMG_2524
Yup, I did it by hand.  I don't actually own a sewing machine, so that wasn't an option.  But, if such a machine ever entered our house, and if I figured out how to use one, I would still sew my zippers in by hand from now on.  I had so much more control.  Granted, it took awhile.  Luckily Penelope was there to hold all the pieces in place.

A few more snow days and I might actually get some more of these WIPs done!

They got me

They got me

The spinners.

They've been campaigning for awhile and I resisted for a couple years.  Then, Amy let me try one of her wheels.

This is one of their tricks.  They know that when you feel the soothing rhythm of the wheel and the fiber passing through your fingers, you will be powerless to resist.

I ordered a wheel. The beautiful Ladybug.

Amy brought her to Knit at Night.

IMG_2535
 Yay!

Speaking of wheels, Anna finished the most beautiful blanket.  The Hemlock Ring Blanket knit in Cascade 220. (ok, it's not a wheel, but it's round.)

Oh, before I forget, the Spunky color of the month is now in stock.  Grinch in Super Nova.

New Noro Book

New Noro Book

We just received what has to be my favorite collection of designs for Noro.  I almost missed this one when the sales rep was here ( I think the Noro sock yarn affected my ability to concentrate!).  But, Amanda was on the task.  She immediately seized this gem out of the pile.  I believe she is plotting her yarn choice to make the sweater on the cover.

But wait!

Who is this Amanda of which I speak?

Amanda is the incredibly talented new addition to our team.  Unfortunately I don't have a picture of her to share at this time - I will subject her to that later.  Next time you're in the shop, say hello and watch her progress on the Noro sweater.

The Noro Sock Yarn is Here!

The Noro Sock Yarn is Here!

I had planned to show you this

(My Citrus Yoke Pullover that now has one sleeve.)

And this
(The completed pair of socks for my grandmother.)
IMG_2637
And a little spinning (saving that for later).

But something far more exciting happened today. UPS delivered our first shipment of Noro Kureyon Sock yarn. Now, I'm sure the UPS guys are pretty used to people greeting them with much anticipation and glee this time of year, but I may have scared our UPS dude just a wee bit.  I was quite literally jumping up and down with the excitement of a whole box of Noro Sock yarn before me.

Thanks to Alec, that early moment was captured on "film."
IMG_2644
Are you ready??

Here's what we got - six of the twelve colors.  All are now available in the shop or through the online store

Of course you know I had to cast on for a pair of socks immediately. Rumor is that you can get a pair of knee highs out of one skein.  I'm testing it and will let you know.

Becka convinced me that a special yarn deserved a new technique and new needles.  Yup.  I took the magic loop plunge.  And I'm using Addi Lace needles US 1.  While double points will probably always be my favorite, the magic look definitely beats 2 circular needles and is quite slick.

Holiday fun

Holiday fun

Saturday night, the Knitting Experience gang gathered at Sandy's house for incredible food and great times. Thank you Sandy!!

IMG_2663

Even Sandy's husband, Sam, caught the knitterly holiday spirit.  He spent the day preparing a mouth watering roast for the event and had the good humor to wear the perfect t-shirt for our crowd.

IMG_2667
We did a yankee swap again this year, but I was rather surprised to see everyone hold back on the swapping.  Granted, ALL the gifts were fabulous.  Yet, there is something about the thrill of the swap.

Or maybe this is me trying to rationalize taking such a great gift from Marcia.  I was the first to swap, and I did feel a little bad about it, but not bad enough to pass up this gorgeous bag handmade by Bridget:
IMG_2672
(Sorry Marcia!)

There were many handmade gifts in the room.  Patti took home these snowflakes crafted by Anna's mother.  (Hi Anna's mom! We miss you!)
IMG_2674
Mindy was lucky enough to get one of Mary Ellen's mini-sweater ornaments.
IMG_2673
Sandy scored these fingerless mitts knit by Marcia.
IMG_2675
The hand model is actually Liz, who originally got the mitts.  Thanks to my breaking the swapping ice, Sandy - lucky enough to get #1 - had her pick of the loot and decided these were just her size.

Hope your holidays are off to a joyous start as well. I'm furiously trying to finish up some last minute Christmas knitting.  Not exactly sure what I was thinking when I decided I had enough time to cast on for another gift yesterday.  AAAGGHHH!

Snow knitting

Snow knitting

What a lovely day at the shop! Despite the snow, the drive in wasn't too bad.  Might have had something to do with the fact that I was only a few minutes behind the plows.

After making a cup of tea, I settled in to check out the mail and found the new Knitscene had arrived.

IMG_2744

And to make things even better, Amy of Spunky Eclectic has not one, but two patterns in this issue. Little sneak didn't tell me they were coming out!

Since she's been so busy getting her fiber of the month club shipped, I'll forgive her.

Speaking of her fiber of the month club, I hope Santa and his helpers have been to her shop recently.  I've been spinning like crazy.  Here's my first 8 ounces:

IMG_2635
Kinda interesting with all the twisty loops.  Amy tells me I can smooth out some of that with blocking.  (The rest is hopeless.)

Did you know that when you block handspun you get to take out your aggression on it? You whack it against something to help settle the twist.  Haven't tried it yet, but sounds like loads of fun and a great way to relieve some holiday stress.

My second batch of yarn is coming out much better.  Scott gave me a braid of Amy's grand opening colorway and it is so pretty.
IMG_2634
I'm not sure which I like better, spinning or predrafting.  Check out the happy bundles of fluff just waiting to become yarn-

IMG_2607
In knitting news, I've been working on a last minute secret Christmas project.  It involved a tragic pattern problem and ripping of the first try, but I'm back on schedule.
IMG_2688
It actually would be done now, if this didn't keep pulling me away for a few rows here and there:
IMG_2693
It is so hard to put down the Noro sock, I just want to see how the next color plays out. The socks are making me so happy.  I'm just winging the pattern.  Cast on my usual 60sts.  Didn't take into account that I wanted knee-highs.  My calves need a little more breathing room than 60sts on US 1.  Rather than rip, I threw in a few random increases to 66sts. Knit some more.  Decided it was still too tight for knee highs.  Cut the length shorter, threw in some decreases, and back to 60sts.  They won't win any awards on the pattern front, but they make me insanely happy and isn't that what it is all about?

I'm not the only one finishing up gifts.  Diana has a few lucky people on her list.
Her market bag:

And a Silky Wool scarf:

Hope you enjoyed the snowy day as well. I'm off to post pictures of the new Spunky yarn we have on the shelves and then to knit.

Good wishes

Good wishes

A quick post to wish you joy and happiness as we head into the new year, and that Santa truly understood all your fiber desires.

Our tree was decked with cookies strung together with knitted i-cord thanks to the incredibly creative Karen.

Santa and his helpers made sure I had enough fiber to keep me spinning into the new year.

IMG_2838
The boys were almost overcome with the excitement of it all.
IMG_2806
Luckily coolness was preserved.
IMG_2811
And through it all I managed to finished my first Noro sock.
IMG_2836
Merry Christmas all!

Dear Diary

Dear Diary

Last night it snowed while I knitted with friends. Because of the messy roads, not everyone could make it. We've been a little frustrated with the continuing pattern of snow on Thursday nights, so Becka suggested that we make an offering of sacrificial lambswool on the altar of the highest snowbank to the knitty deity.

IMG_2842

It couldn't hurt.

But, the evening was lovely nonetheless (especially so because Wendy joined us!) and we may just have to schedule some make-up sessions for all those from away.

Today the boys and I played in the snow for a bit. Connor and I built a castle. Two walls are up and we're discussing design options for the other sides.

IMG_2846
I played with fiber.

After reading a few tips on spinning and caring for your homespun yarn, I set the twist on one skein.
IMG_2856
Skeined up another that may be plied with the original batch from the same dye lot.
IMG_2857
Spun quite a bit more in natural white.
IMG_2866

I plan to ply this in the next few days, but first need to make my own lazy kate, unless Bec lets me borrow hers (hint, hint).

The boys are gathering for pizza and movie night. Perfect time to pick up the knitting.

All in all, a very good day.
